  7. DECadvantage ╤ SMB Server provides file and printer services to Personal
  8. Computers. These services are based on the X/Open Develpment Specification:
  9. Protocols for X/Open PC Interworking: SMB. DECadvantage ╤ SMB Server uses
  10. NetBIOS to communicate between MS-DOS based PCs and SCO UNIX-based servers. The
  11. SMB protocol is used as the high-level command language between the requestor
  12. (the PC) and the server, while the underlying protocols can be OSI or
  13. TCP/IP

  15. The included file services provide DOS users with a remote file system that
  16. appears to DOS as just another disk drive, which can be accessed using standard
  17. DOS commands. Applications and data can be stored on the UNIX file system, thus
  18. creating a common shared file system for a group of workstations in a network.
  19. Users can "attach" to file services within the network, and share their own
  20. remote files and directories with other network users. Printer services
  21. included offer the DOS user access to the shared printing facilities of UNIX by
  22. simply printing to the standard DOS printer devices. SMB Server for
  23. DECadvantage redirects the print output to the appropriate UNIX printer
  24. spooler. In addition to the file and printer services DECadvantage ╤ SMB Server
  25. provides a remote execution facility that allows DOS users access to native,
  26. noninteractive UNIX software.
